SUMMARY:Rakish + Rasa Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Rasa String Quartet explores the musical space where classical and folk traditions intersect and influence one another. \nFormed in 2019\, the Boston-based ensemble brings together violinists Emma Powell and Maura Shawn Scanlin\, violist Kiyoshi Hayashi\, and cellist Mina Kim\, who are graduates of the New England Conservatory\, the Shepherd School of Music\, and Yale University. \nThe quartet has earned top prizes at competitions including Chamber Music in Yellow Springs\, the Plowman Chamber Music Competition\, the MTNA Chamber Music Competition\, and the Associazione Europea di Musica e Comunicazione (Italy). They have served as ensemble-in-residence at Phillips Exeter Academy and are currently engaged in a two-year performance and recording partnership with Boston’s GBH Music. \nRasa has collaborated with renowned folk artists such as Celtic harpist Maeve Gilchrist\, Irish fiddler Liz Carroll\, vocalist-composer Moira Smiley\, and singer-songwriter Judy Collins\, and has performed across the U.S. and abroad at events including the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition\, Celebrity Series of Boston\, Newport Classical\, Rockport Music\, Jordan Hall\, and the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival. \nTheir love of teaching has led to educational residencies at Bowdoin College\, Walnut Hill School for the Arts\, UMass Dartmouth\, and Boston Music Project\, among others.  \nBy exploring the connection between music and storytelling at the heart of folk traditions\, Rasa delivers fresh\, engaging performances that blend classical elegance with folk charm\, celebrate global musical roots\, and highlight underrepresented composers. \nIn Sanskrit\, the term rasa refers to the indescribable power of art to move\, inspire\, and connect us—a quality Rasa String Quartet strives to embody in every performance. \n  \nFind out more at rasastringquartet.com  \n“Rasa String Quartet showcases music where folk\, rock\, and classical veins intersect\, delivered with confidence\, strikingly tight ensemble\, and consummate cohesiveness.”\n— The Boston Musical Intelligencer \n“The Rasa String Quartet played with both a poise and playfulness that perfectly reflected the nature of the music.”\n— Harvard Crimson \nRakish  \nBIOGRAPHY  \nRooted in tradition with an ear to the future\, Rakish brings an infectious playfulness to their earnest musical explorations. The two friends share an unbridled love for both traditional Celtic and American music and their near telepathic ensemble playing springs from years of touring and collaboration.  \nStrings Magazine says: “Explorative and versatile\, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition\, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.”  \nKnown for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world\, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Scanlin is a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting hold the regional music of her homeland close.  \nRaised in the Washington\, D.C. Irish music community\, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literature and poetry\, an inexhaustible wellspring of ideas he continues to tap. His settings of modernist poems — like James Joyce’s “Chamber Music” — epitomize the duo’s approach: alchemizing old and new into something wholly Rakish. A keenly sought-after collaborative guitarist\, Conor has performed with Celtic luminaries like Seamus Egan and Maeve Gilchrist.  \nRakish\, embracing the unconventional connotation of their namesake\, make music with freewheeling verve. Performance highlights include the Library of Congress\, Celtic Colours International Music Festival\, Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls\, the Corvallis Celtic Festival\, and an Official Folk Alliance Showcase. They have taught at esteemed fiddle camps across the country including Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, Folk College\, Katie McNally’s Boston States Fiddle Camp\, and Hanneke Cassel’s Pure Dead Brilliant Fiddle Weekend. \nOn Now\, O Now\, the duo’s sophomore release\, it is clear Rakish cannot be pigeonholed into one genre and is most comfortable occupying the inbetween. Together they journey through Celtic and Americana styles\, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition. \n
