SUMMARY:Low Lily
DESCRIPTION:“Low Lily brandishes their formidable individual folk foundations within a collective sound that’s as smart with sense of pop phrasing and flair as it is roots-savvy.” \n-Roots Music Report \n“[Low Lily has] an incredible knack for putting a little pop twist on a traditional folk/Americana sound… it’s a blend that works beautifully.”  \n– PopMatters \n \nWith a vocal blend that has been dubbed “outstanding” and “meticulous\,” Low Lily has crafted a signature sound which they have shared with enthusiastic audiences throughout North America and the UK\, garnering two #1 songs on international folk radio and two Independent Music Award wins. \nChosen as Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s “Most Wanted Band” of 2016\, Low Lily plays acoustic music that is deeply rooted in tradition yet sounds refreshingly contemporary. In the past six years\, the band released a full-length album with award-winning title track “10\,000 Days Like These” and their original song “Hope Lingers On”\, which has been sung by choirs around the world as an anthem for peace and justice. In the past couple of years\, they have also released singles and a holiday EP\, and are currently recording their third album\, “Angels in the Wreckage”. \nThe members of Low Lily are veterans of the stage\, having performed with numerous well-known names in folk and traditional music: Mandolinist/guitarist/singer Flynn Cohen has toured with Ruth Moody\, John Whelan\, Cathie Ryan and Aoife Clancy. Guitarist/singer Liz Simmons has performed alongside Tom Chapin\, Livingston Taylor\, Melanie\, and Long Time Courting. Newest member Fiddler/singer Natalie Padilla has performed with Peter Rowan and Elephant Revival. \n  \nMeet the Band… \n \nLiz Simmons\nGuitar & Vocals\n“An artist with full command of her most precious instrument\, her voice\, which she utilizes beautifully”\n-Red Guitar Music \n  \nBorn in San Francisco to musician parents\, Liz spent her early childhood traveling through the wilds of north America in a sky blue VW bus. Her parents were itinerant\, moving from California to Oregon\, then to Ketchikan\, Alaska where they played regular gigs in the pubs for the locals. Liz and her sisters’ lullabies were traditional songs\, and by day their soundtrack was the rock and roll and New Orleans brass music their parents played in their band. Once the family settled in rural New Hampshire\, Liz received classical musical training\, but soon found her way back to folk music. She was particularly drawn to the intersections of traditional music\, and how they connect with contemporary sounds.  \nIn 2005\, Liz received a BA from Goddard College where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s.  She then went on to found Annalivia and then Low Lily with Flynn Cohen\, as well as perform alongside Long Time Courting\, Hannah Sanders\, EVA\, Livingston Taylor\, Tom Chapin\, and others.  2021 saw the release of “Poets”\, her first solo album in fifteen years\, which has been lauded as “an ageless album” (Irish Music Magazine)\, “more than the sum of its considerable parts” (RNR Magazine)\, and “pure poetry indeed” (Goldmine Magazine). \n  \n \nFLYNN COHEN\nGuitar\, Mandolin & Vocals\n“A versatile string virtuoso”\n-Dirty Linen Magazine \n  \nFlynn\, at the age of eleven\, was drawn to the guitar after an injury left him unable to continue to pursue his passion for sports. When he was in his mid-teens\, his aunt and uncle turned him onto the likes of Fairport Convention\, Michael Hedges\, The Bothy Band\, and Pentangle. At the time\, all he wanted was to play guitar like John Renbourn of Pentangle\, so when the opportunity to study with Renbourn arose at the Dartington College of Arts in England\, he jumped at the chance. He resided in England for three years\, during which time he studied with Renbourn\, and the great Davey Graham (inventor of DADGAD tuning). He continued to cultivate his skills in the accompaniment of Irish music\, and paradoxically in England is where Flynn found bluegrass\, which became his new obsession. \nAfter graduating from Dartington\, he headed to Oakland\, CA to attend Mills College\, where he immersed himself in the Irish trad and bluegrass music scenes there. Ultimately\, he made his way to the east coast after a phone call with accordion champion John Whelan\, who offered him the job as his guitarist. Once in Boston\, he was also hired to accompany three incredible fiddle prodigies in their late teens – Laura Cortese\, Hanneke Cassel\, and Lissa Schneckenburger.  Flynn has also accompanied luminaries such as Adrienne Young\, Cathie Ryan\, Ruth Moody\, and many more. \n  \n \nNATALIE PADILLA\nFiddle\, Banjo & Vocals\n“Exacting attention to detail… \nand an infectious energy”\n-Strings Magazine \n  \nBorn into a family of acclaimed roots musicians\, Natalie Padilla was immersed in fiddle and violin music at a very young age.  She initially studied Texas-Style fiddle under the tutelage of her mother\, award-winning fiddler Nancy Padilla\, and began winning contests on her own at the age of 6. Along with the traditions of Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddle music\, Natalie also has deep roots in classical violin. In 2011 she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado and can still be found sitting in the violin section of an orchestra. \n She has recorded two full length albums of original folk music\, maintains a large studio of fiddlers and travels near and far to teach and perform. Natalie’s love for sharing music and community remains her biggest inspiration.
