DESCRIPTION:     Two great musical acts\, together on one night to kick off the 2018 season!  \n \nCarrie Newcomer\nCarrie Newcomer is a songwriter\, recording artist\, performer and educator who lives in Indiana. With 16 albums\, Newcomer’s songwriting has impressed the likes of Billboard\, USA Today\, and Rolling Stone\, which wrote that she “asks all the right questions.” Dubbed a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe\, Newcomer is acclaimed for her “deep\, rich alto and penchant for exquisite melodies.” She was listed as one of “The 50 most influential folk musicians of the past 50 years” by Chicago’s WFMT and Boston’s WBEZ listed her as one of the most influential folk artists of the last 25 years. \n \nOver the Rhine\nOver the Rhine is an American\, Ohio-based folk music band\, the core of which is the husband-and-wife team of pianist/ guitarist/ bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Berquist. Through the years\, they have toured the world and recorded in many band variations. They have shared the stage with Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Adrian Belew\, Squeeze\, Ani DiFranco\, My Morning Jacket\, Hem\, and toured as “adjunct” members of Cowboy Junkies. It’s their mix of lyrical eloquence\, emotional nuance and melodic soulfulness that have already won Bergquist (vocals\, acoustic guitar\, tenor guitar) and Detweiler (vocals\, acoustic guitar\, keyboards) a passionate fan base and considerable critical acclaim. DESCRIPTION:Classical Piano \n \nCharacterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet…[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms\, questions\, and coaxes\,”20-year-old American pianist Daniel Hsu captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 2017. Also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist\, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition\, and bronze medalist of the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition\, he is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, Daniel Hsu began his studies at age 6 with Larisa Kagan. He made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra at age 8\, and his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area at age 9\, before being accepted into Curtis at the age of 10\, along with his two older siblings. He is currently the Richard A. Doran Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music\, where he has studied with Gary Graffman\, Robert McDonald\, and Eleanor Sokoloff. Classical brilliance and perfection!
