SUMMARY:True Blues
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Corey Harris\, a MacArthur Grant recipient\, along with America’s foremost blues harmonica virtuoso\, Phil Wiggins and Cedric Watson\, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the blues in an evening of music and conversation. \n \nThe True Blues concert vividly brings to life this crucial wellspring of American music through these legendary musicians. Corey was featured in Martin Scorcese’s “The Blues: A Musical Journey\,” which followed Corey on a roots journey to West Africa. Cory Harris is a guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter and band leader who has carved out his own niche in blues. A powerful singer and accomplished guitarist\, he has appeared at venues throughout the North America\, Europe\, Brazil\, The Caribbean\, West Africa\, Asia\, Australia and New Zealand. In his early twenties he lived in Cameroon\, West Africa for a year\, which had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded many old songs of the blues tradition while also creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae\, soul\, rock and West African music.  Phil Wiggins is arguably America’s foremost blues harmonica virtuoso. While rooted in the melodic Piedmont or “Tidewater” blues of the Chesapeake region\, his mastery of the instrument now transcends stylistic boundaries. Born in Washington D.C. in 1954\, Phil Wiggins achieved worldwide acclaim over three decades as one half of the premier Piedmont blues duo of Cephas & Wiggins. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious WC Handy award and was honored with both the National Endowment of the Arts 2017 National Heritage Fellowship and the 2021 Maryland Heritage Award\, both the most prestigious awards for traditional arts. One of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, Creole and Zydeco (Louisiana French) music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston\, TX. Just two years later\, he moved to south Louisiana\, quickly immersing himself in French music and language. Over the next several years\, Cedric performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups\, including the Pine Leaf Boys\, several others\, and with his own group\, Bijou Creole. Blues is at the center of Corey\, Phil and Cedric’s artistry\, and the blues takes center stage in this True Blues concert. \n

SUMMARY:The Campbell Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Campbell Brothers present a compelling\, rich variety of African-American\, Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: the growling\, wailing\, shouting\, singing and swinging voice of the steel guitar\, played as you have never heard it played before. \n \nAs the music moves from sanctuary to concert hall — including the Hollywood Bowl\, the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, SF Jazz — secular audiences are now able to appreciate a performance both devoted and rocking. Pedal steel guitarist Chuck\, and his lap steel-playing brother Darick\, are two of the finest in this tradition. Rounding out the band\, which has been playing together for nearly two decades\, is a high-energy rhythm section featuring brother Phil Campbell on electric guitar and his son Carlton on drums. Katie Jackson’s classic\, gutsy gospel vocals bring the ensemble to a level of energy and expression that defies description. \n

SUMMARY:Nation Beat
DESCRIPTION:Jazz-infused\, funkified New Orleans-meets-Brazil brass & percussion \nForró. Funk. Brass. Pounded by calloused hands; blasted by tight grooves. It calls across time and continents – with a response from hips and feet. It’s the force that blew through Louis Armstrong in the twenties. It’s the power that gets Brazilians swinging in the streets for carnival. \n \nNation Beat singularly conjures up this elemental musical mojo\, drawing on the wellsprings of rhythm that lit up jazz and got maracatu thundering. Nation Beat takes off with be-bop-via-Brazil drumming; propelled by percussive bursts of New Orleans-flavored brass. But forget the musical history; this is music to make you dance. Nation Beat’s live shows have taken on an almost mythological aura for their ability to lift the souls\, and the feet\, of their growing cross-cultural audience. Band leader\, drummer/percussionist Scott Kettner continues to be at the forefront of merging different musical elements together with cross-cultural explorations where brass band and percussion explode in a jazz-infused\, funkified New Orleans-meets-Brazil carnival sound.

SUMMARY:Adam Neiman
DESCRIPTION:Award winning\, preeminent American classical pianist \nAdam Neiman has cultivated a breathtaking career spanning more than three decades and traversing four continents. \n \nPossessed of an encyclopedic repertoire\, Mr. Neiman has been universally acclaimed as a thought-provoking\, charismatic\, and highly virtuosic performer\, whose continually expanding discography has granted him a rarified legacy among 21st-century performers. At age 8\, Neiman’s trajectory as a concert pianist began\, immediately gaining momentum with a succession of regional and national competition triumphs\, recital and concerto appearances across the United States\, and successful forays onto the international concert and competition circuit by his early teens. As a 17-year old undergraduate piano major at the Juilliard School\, Mr. Neiman won three of America’s most prestigious classical music awards: an Avery Fisher Career Grant\, Gilmore Young Artist Award\, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Nominated during the same year for a Grammy Award\, he subsequently graduated from the Juilliard School in 1999 as a recipient of the school’s highest honors: the rarely-bestowed Arthur Rubinstein Award\, and as a two-time winner of its Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. SUMMARY:James Hill and Anne Janelle
DESCRIPTION:Ukulele and Cello\nTheir music came together by chance.  When you hear the ukulele of James Hill paired with the cello of Anne Janelle you’ll be thankful it did. They first collaborated when picked for a track on a compilation album. It led to their duo recording\, True Love Don’t Weep\, a mixture of traditional tunes and original songs which showcased the duo’s ability “to capture the soul of a song\,” (Folk World).  The recording won a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Traditional Album of the Year in 2009. Since then they have released solo albums and toured in over 15 countries\, making their mark not only as world-class\, award-winning instrumentalists but as some of the finest songwriters of their generation. Now they are back in tandem. “We walked our separate musical paths for a while\, but I think we both came to realize\, each in our own way\, that the duo is our strongest musical offering. There is passion\, there is diversity\, there are many levels with which an audience can engage with our music when it’s not one or the other but both of us\,” said Janelle. You’ll find\, said the Wellington Dominion-Post\, that a night out with the duo is “the perfect evening of tunes\, stories and musical virtuosity”

SUMMARY:Ranky Tanky
DESCRIPTION:Gullah music of the South Carolina/Georgia coastal islands \n \n“Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It\,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit\, the Charleston\, SC based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts\, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies\, the musical roots of Charleston\, SC are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown. The soulful songs of the Gullah culture are brought to life by this band of native South Carolinians who mix the low country traditions with large doses of jazz\, gospel\, funk\, and R&B. Working as an in-demand jazz quartet on the Charleston scene in the late 1990s before splitting off to each make their way as freelance musicians\, they each gained years of valuable experience while developing a deeper appreciation for the South Carolina Gullah tradition from which they came. The band reformed with the dynamic vocalist Quiana Parler to celebrate the bone-deep mix of spirituals and gutbucket blues that mark the low country mainland and Sea Islands – music made by a self-contained culture of descendants of enslaved Africans that introduced such indelible parts of American songbook as “Kum Bah Yah” and “Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore.” A night of incredible music that will move you – body and soul!

SUMMARY:Ginkgoa
DESCRIPTION:Ginkgoa is a French/American Pop Electro-swing band founded in Paris. She comes from New York\, he lives in Paris – her name is Nicolle Rochelle\, his name is Antoine Chatenet\, and fighting against all the odds of their geographic destiny\, they found each other. That very same evening they met by pure chance in a Parisian jazz club\, and GINKGOA was born. A hybrid genre between Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace\, they only have one thing in mind: to make generations of people dance\, sway\, and sing along to melodies that stay in your head long after GINKGOA has left the building. SUMMARY:Corky Siegel and Chamber Blues
DESCRIPTION:Few can claim to have forged an entirely original genre of music\, but in the 60’s\, Corky Siegel did just that. Guiding the blues of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters out of smoky bars and onto the stages of the Chicago Symphony\, New York Philharmonic and beyond\, the harmonica-playing mad scientist had the tuxedo-and-gown crowd on its feet\, clamoring for more of this blues-classical alchemy. These days\, the harmonica virtuoso and composer is continent-hopping with Indian percussion and string quartet in Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues\, continuing to bring classical and blues fans shoulder-to-shoulder\, and obliterating musical categorization in the process. Chamber Blues is celebrating more than 30 years of performances that have brought this original genre to great success. This journey has included countless radio\, TV\, and major motion picture credits and many prestigious honors and awards. Chamber Blues has completed their 4th CD “Different Voices” (the 25th for Corky) and it is scheduled for release at our February 2017 concert.

SUMMARY:Jayme Stone's Lomax Project
DESCRIPTION:Sea island spirituals\, Creole calypsos and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes. \n“Jayme Stone’s Folklife” follows the bends and bayous through the deep river of song\, story\, and folkways. Evolving out of the “Lomax Project\,” this gathering of versatile musicians blows the dust off of old songs and remakes them for modern ears. With spellbinding singing\, virtuosic playing and captivating storytelling\, their concerts and educational programs are moving\, inventive and participatory experiences. \nJayme Stone (banjo\, voice)\nMoira Smiley (voice\, accordion)\nSumaia Jackson (fiddle\, voice)\nJoe Phillips (bass\, voice) \nTwo-time Juno-winning banjoist\, composer and instigator Jayme Stone makes music inspired by sounds from around the world\, bridging folk\, jazz and chamber music. His award-winning albums both defy and honor the banjo’s long role in the world’s music\, turning historical connections into compelling music. The Other Side of the Air (2013) is a travelogue of imaginary landscapes and faraway lands. The album traverses the Cinnamon Route through Persia and India\, revisits and reinvents melodies Stone collected in West Africa and includes a Concerto for Banjo and Chamber Symphony. Room of Wonders (2010) explores music from Norway\, Sweden\, Bulgaria\, Brazil\, Italy and North America. The repertoire includes a movement from Bach’s French Suite\, a\nMoorish sword-fighting dance and Stone’s lush\, edgy originals. Africa to Appalachia (2008) is a boundary-crossing musical collaboration with griot singer Mansa Sissoko that explores the banjo’s African roots and Stone’s adventures in Mali. The Utmost (2007) draws inspiration from Japanese poetry and Brazilian literature and includes a tiny symphony that takes place inside an imaginary lightbulb. Stone is the consummate collaborator\, unearthing musical artifacts and magnetizing extraordinary artists to help rekindle these understudied sounds. \n// LOMAX PROJECT\nFocusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax\, this collaboratory brings together some of North America’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive\, recycle and re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties\, African-American acappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands\, ancient Appalachian ballads\, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains\, cowhands\, fishermen\, prisoners and homemakers. Collaborators include Grammy- winning songwriter Tim O’Brien\, Bruce\nMolsky\, Margaret Glaspy\, Moira Smiley\, Brittany Haas\, Julian Lage\, Eli West\, and more. In addition to concerts\, the Lomax Project offers educational programs and outreach activities for K-12 schools\, universities and the general public. SUMMARY:Madeleine Peyroux
DESCRIPTION:American jazz singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist\, Madeleine Peyroux (French pronunciation: [madˈlɛn pɛˈʁu])\, is noted for her vocal style\, which has been compared to that of Billie Holiday. The American born Peyroux was a musician on the streets of Paris as a teenager\, living abroad with her mother. Madeleine quickly became entranced with the local buskers\, spending much of her time accompanying a regular band on the sidewalks of the Latin Quarter with her distinctive voice\, and later joining a touring jazz and blues band. Back in the states\, Peyroux was discovered in her early twenties in a New York Club and the rest is history  – with seven albums to her credit and nearly two decades of worldwide touring.
